Formula, Fandom, and Fiery Passion:
The Allure of the Sports Romance...
presented by 831 Stories s+2
at McNally Jackson s+6
Competition, physical prowess, celebrity, wealth, risk, and (perhaps most importantly?) sweat:
The world of professional athleticism naturally introduces elements and stakes that lay the foundation for a strong romance arc. And while the collective cultural obsession with Heated Rivalry’s television adaptation has turned new audiences onto the genre, sports-centric love stories are a category mainstay within the romance readership where hockey books occupy outsized shelf space and the rising popularity of F1 settings proved to be an early harbinger of the motorsport’s mainstream appeal. This conversation will explore how and why the subgenre gets points on the board, the role that formula and fandom plays in both forms of entertainment, and the broader implications for both industries.
Tyler McCall is a writer and editor based in New York City specializing in writing about fashion, celebrity, and pop culture with bylines appearing in publications like L’Officiel, Elle, Town & Country, and The Cut. Her debut romance novel, People Like You, releases Spring 2027.
Simone Soltani is a romance author and former ghost writer for a serialized fiction platform. Born and raised in Washington, DC, she holds a BA in Geography from The George Washington University, which she likes to think comes in handy for world-building in her novels. When she’s not writing, she spends most of her time planning vacations she’ll probably never get to go on, reorganizing her many bookshelves, and watching sports while cuddling with her dogs.
Cat Disabato‘s first novel, The Ghost Network, was deemed “a smart and thorny debut” by the New York Times, and her second, U Up?, was named a 2021 NYT Best Mystery. Rooting Interest is her romance debut. She lives in Los Angeles, and her rooting interest is the Los Angeles Sparks.
Maitreyi Anantharaman is a staff writer at the subscription sports site Defector, where she covers women’s basketball. Her writing about the WNBA has been anthologized in the 2025 edition of The Year’s Best Sports Writing. She’s at work on a book about the rapid cultural rise of women’s basketball and its young superstars for Dutton. She grew up in Michigan and lives in Chicago.
Lily Herman is a writer and editor who’s talked about romance media with Bustle, Shondaland, BuzzFeed, and more. She previously co-hosted and produced the popular romance novel podcast Friends to Lovers, which Town & Country named one of the best book podcasts of 2022. She’s now hosting No Grip, a Formula 1 culture show that covers many under-explored pockets of the sport, including the recent uptick of F1 romance novels.
