Where do Seaport residents and local workers go for lunch and dinner, to enjoy a moment of quiet or a day with the kids? We check in with our neighbors to get the scoop on their Lower Manhattan favorites.
This week: Primp NYC owner Maria Ho-Burge and Fellow Barber founder Sam Buffa.
The Seaport District welcomed two grooming and beauty hubs in 2019, with the arrival of Primp NYC, a hair, brow, beauty and wellness experience, and Fellow Barber, an elevated, modern-day barbershop. Here’s where you’ll find their respective founders in the neighborhood.
Favorite places to eat and drink in the Seaport District:
I eat everywhere, but 10 Corso Como, Made Fresh Daily, Dorlan’s, Fresh Salt, Bin 220 and SUteiShi are my go-tos. I’m at Cowgirl Seahorse with my family all the time, and I’m excited to have The Fulton, R17 and Coco Bistro in the rotation now.
Do you have a favorite spot in the neighborhood for a moment of quiet?
There’s a lull around three o’clock in the afternoon when most of the restaurants quiet down and you can walk into any one of them, sit at the bar and have a glass of wine. I like to do that and just take a moment for myself.
Favorite weekend activities:
There’s always something going on at the Seaport, so we really take advantage of the neighborhood. I love the summer concerts on The Rooftop at Pier 17. Last year I went to probably a dozen concerts. This summer, I loved being up at R17 for cocktails.
What about things to do with kids?
I’m teaching my kids how to ride bicycles this summer, and we go to Peck Slip Park to bike. Like me, the kids love that this neighborhood is kind of an anomaly in this big city. There’s a great community here and it really feels like our own secret neighborhood. You walk down the street and say hi to the shopkeepers, you wave to the restaurant owners. Everyone knows each other. You get to know all of the dogs’ names, which is fun. It feels like small-town living—in New York City.
Best place to start the morning:
Hole in the Wall café on Cliff Street is great for coffee and breakfast.
Best happy hour:
The best bar in the area is Fresh Salt on Beekman Street.
Favorite date or dinner spot:
I’m stoked about the new Jean-Georges restaurant, The Fulton.
