The Rooftop Wraps Its Biggest Concert Series Yet

Over sixty shows. More than half of them sold out. The 2022 Summer Concert Series on The Rooftop at Pier 17 hosted its biggest lineup yet, delivering six months of incredible live performances set against an iconic backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge and New York City skyline.

The one-of-a-kind venue at the Seaport kicked off the summer with a performance by Jamaican artist Koffee on May 12, and closed out at the end of October with indie-pop duo Tegan & Sara. In between, the stage hosted a wide range of star acts, from country artists like Zach Bryan and Billy Strings to long-time crowd favorites including The Offspring, DEVO, Blondie, and Elvis Costello. Some first-time rooftop performers included Pusha T, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Tash Sultana, while Pier 17 also drew return performances from acts like The Psychedelic Furs, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Iration, The Maine, Mt. Joy, Pepper and Rebelution.

So, what makes a band want to come back to The Rooftop? The artists themselves say it all: “This is one of the best places to play music in the whole wide world,” said Matt Quinn of Mt. Joy, coming back in September 2022 after they performed Pier 17 in October 2021. Rise Against also returned to our stage following their 2021 sold out appearance, prompting lead singer and guitarist Tim McIlrath to tell the crowd, “You’re going to be so disappointed with every single other venue you go to. This one sets the bar pretty high.” Bands who played The Rooftop for the first time were similarly in awe: “The view!” said Simple Plan drummer Chuck Comeau. “I think this is the nicest venue we’ve ever played.”

As the members of Aussie band Chase Atlantic pointed out, having the Brooklyn Bridge behind the stage, and being able to look out beyond Lower Manhattan to see the Statue of Liberty during the show makes for a unique, quintessentially New York live experience.

The concerts prove just as memorable for the audience, too, with its open-air setting, epic views but an intimate feel, with a capacity for 3,500. Plus this season, two new hospitality spaces, the Patrón Patio and Grey Goose Terrace, also gave concert-goers the chance to refresh and mingle with VIP vibes before and during the artist sets.
