Waterway Horns s+23
Enjoy the return of “Waterway Horns,” a singular initiative that activates NYC’s vital public waterfront gathering spaces through the power of music, and celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Make Music New York.
In partnership with the Tideland Institute, Captain N.D. Austin has outfitted the historic tugboat Shoofly with a custom-designed ‘Hobophonium’ sound system made of salvaged tubas, ship horns, and bells. Musicians aboard the tug will perform as it makes its way along the East River and Hudson River, to be joined at select piers by a Landlubber Ensemble assembled under the direction of acclaimed composer/musician Stefan Zeniuk. Join us in creating a dynamic and integrated call and response composition!
While visible and audible all along the Hudson River shorefront throughout the day, key “stages” featuring the Landlubbers along the route include:
- Pier I, Riverside Park, west of W70th St – 12:00-12:15pm
- Pier 45, Hudson River Park, west of West 10th St – 2:00-2:15pm
- Pier 17, South Street Seaport – 3:30-3:45pm

JAMES R. BURKE
Executive Director, Make Music New York
James began his career in the music business as a songwriter and post-punk rocker, but after the tour van of his most promising band (Idle, on Big Deal Records) caught fire en route from a gig, he settled into the more respectable life of a “performing arts presenter.” He now has over twenty-seven years of leadership experience producing music for Paradigm Associated Labels, Reel to Reel Records, Central Park SummerStage, Westhampton Beach PAC, and, currently, Make Music New York and RiseUpNYC. He read philosophy at Boston College, Oxford University (Manchester Harris College), The New School for Social Research, and the School of Hard Knocks. He lives in Astoria with his wife and three children.
